ABE BEESON
2008 Daytime Entertainment Emcee

KPLU-FM Evening Jazz host Abe Beeson was born in the Eastern Washington town of Ellensburg, but his family moved to Duvall in the late 1970's where they owned and operated the well-loved Silver Spoon restaurant. A graduate of Tolt High School, Abe performed with the school's marching band in many Duvall Days parades during the mid-'80's.

While earning his Bachelor's degree in Communications at Pacific Lutheran University, Abe was hired by KPLU-FM as a news production assistant, working his way through the ranks and hosting his first jazz program on Christmas Day of 1990.

Abe's interest in radio goes back to his childhood listening to the CBS Mystery Theater. His love of music grew out of his parents' fondness for the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, CSNY, Stevie Wonder, and Manhattan Transfer. He's a dedicated fan of nearly all styles of music, from hip-hop to punk rock to country and jazz. His favorite jazz musicians include Thelonious Monk, Gene Harris, Ben Webster, and Miles Davis.

Abe's hobbies include sailing, skiing, bicycling, and what he refers to as the "greatest game ever invented" - basketball.

CULTIVATION UTILITY VEHICLE
Main Street

Adopt a piece of land and a native plant. Artist Vaughn Bell brings her Cultivation Utility Vehicle (CUV), a more organic version of the traditional hot dog cart, to Duvall's Main Street. Nothing is for sale from the cart. Instead, Bell offers pieces of "land" with native plants growing inside for "adoption." Participants sign an adoption form, co-signed by the artist, and receive information (species/history/origins) and instructions for the care of their adopted personal landscape. Look for the CUV on Main Street as you view the Valley Art Show.

TRASH APES

Performer Christian Swenson's unique combination of dance, drama and comedy defies description. He's been called "a one-man animal kingdom" and "the quintessential vertebrate." At Duvall Days, Swenson and two other performers appear as the Trash Apes, actors in gorilla suits picking up trash on the festival grounds. Moving and behaving as apes, they will interact with festival-goers, but will generally keep to the task at hand, picking up after the humans. In keeping with this year's festival recycling program, the Trash Apes have been trained to recycle!
