About Duvall

Duvall - Carnation Police Reserve Program
There are a few minimum requirements that have to be met before becoming a Reserve Police Officer. The first thing is to pass a written civil service exam. Then an oral board which includes being interviewed by citizens. Next comes a polygraph exam and a psychological exam.

Once you have done that and your results and qualifications are acceptable, you are eligible to be accepted and hired as a Reserve Police Officer. You will then be sent to a Reserve Police Officer Academy certified by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. The academy lasts approximately 5 months and is 220 hours long.

You will attend the Academy two (2) days a week, typically Tuesdays, Thursdays and some Saturdays. You will be in class approximately 3 to 4 hours, except on Saturdays, which usually lasts for 8 hours.

When you have successfully completed the Academy you are able to come back to the Duvall - Carnation Police Department and enter into a 12 week Field Training program. At this time you will be qualified as a Class 2 Reserve Officer.

You will be put with a qualified Field Training Officer (FTO) who will take you out on the streets and through the Department manual which will teach you the policy's and procedures of the Duvall - Carnation Police Department.

When you have successfully completed your 12 week training program and finish your one (1) year probation period you will then be classified as a Class 3 Reserve Police Officer. At this time you are able to be in a car by yourself while still being under close supervision by a FTO Officer or another full time Officer.

During all stages of your probation period and after being off of probation all Reserves are required by the Department to put in at least 16 hours of Reserve time and 2 hours of Department training per month.

The final stage is Class 4. When you have reached this stage you are able to function just as a full time Police Officer. You are expected to go out and perform professionally and have the knowledge to handle 90 percent of all calls. You are no longer supervised by another officer and it is understood that you know the elements of the crime and you have made the right choice.
